Tea party favorite Rand Paul has a scenario for increased taxes on the rich.

Add Sen. Rand Paul to a growing list of even conservative Republicans who appear to be giving into the idea that taxes soon will rise on the wealthiest Americans as part of a deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff.

Paul, may have been elected in 2010 as one of the most fervent heroes of the tea party, but even he seems to see the writing on the wall as President Obama has public opinion on his side in calling for an end to the tax cuts for the top 2 percent of taxpayers.

Appearing this week on Fox News, the junior senator from Kentucky gamed out a scenario in which congressional Republicans would give Obama and the Democrats a tax increase — but without any Republican fingerprints on it.

He says that House Republicans should “[g]ive in by voting present, let the Democrats pass an increase in the upper tax brackets, [then the bill] comes over to the Senate, Republicans vote no, and it becomes a Democrat tax increase but not a Republican/Democrat tax increase, which I think is a mistake for the Republicans.”

Separately, a new member of the Senate GOP leadership team, expressed faith that his party would not let taxes rise on the other 98 percent of Americans.

“I believe we’re going to pass the $250,000 and below sooner or later, and we really don’t have much leverage there because those rates go up by operation of law Dec. 31. I would focus on the areas where we do have more leverage,” says incoming Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn of Texas, according to a report from Politico.
